What are the benefits of clove?

Clove is a spice widely used for cooking and has many health benefits.

The medicinal properties of clove (Syzygium aromaticus) are linked to its main component, a substance called eugenol, which is a strong antiseptic. Its effects help in the treatment of nausea, flatulence, indigestion and diarrhea. It contains bactericidal, antiviral attributes, and is also used as an anesthetic for the relief of toothache.

Due to its anti-inflammatory qualities, one of the main benefits of the ingestion of clove concerns to the digestive system. Cloves increase the secretion of gastrointestinal enzymes, improving digestion and relieving problems such as constipation, nausea and stomachache. Furthermore, it speeds up the metabolism, which facilitates burning fat and can be used as a natural slimming product.

Eugenol, oil extracted from cloves, occupies an important position in the evolution of Dentistry and is one of the few traditional medicines still used by dentists. The substance acts as a natural antiseptic, by preventing the growth of bacteria that cause gum diseases, reducing the concentration of plaque and controlling toothache.

Cloves are a source of vitamin A, which helps eye health and cell renewal; vitamin C, which helps to strengthen the immune system and slows down the aging of body tissues; vitamin E, which has a powerful antioxidant action and therefore reduces inflammation; and vitamin K, essential in the correct blood clotting process. It is also a relevant source of minerals, such as iron, a fundamental substance for the functioning of cells, and potassium, which is important for the bone, muscle and circulatory structures. In addition, it contains phosphorus, magnesium and selenium.

The hypoglycemic effect of clove makes it a natural and complementary alternative treatment or functional food for pre-diabetic patients and patients with mild diabetes, controlled with exercises and diet. Clove tea helps in the treatment of respiratory problems, by fighting viruses and bacteria that affect the lungs, and helps eliminate irritation in the throat, being very effective when mixed with other ingredients, such as honey. It also promotes the proper functioning of the thyroid, being a great ally of those who have hypothyroidism. Its natural drink can yet be used as an alternative way to eliminate intestinal parasites.

How to use clove

The properties of cloves for medicinal purposes are best used in the form of teas, which can be prepared together with cinnamon, lemon or ginger. The spice can also be consumed in powder or in essential oil.

The tea is made with a spoon of cloves (10 grams), in a pot with 1 liter of water. After boiling, leave for another ten minutes and then turn off. Keep the container stuffy, until it cools a little and strain, and preferably consume three times throughout the day.

Essential oil and other herbal preparations, such as creams or gels containing cloves, can be found in health food stores and compounding pharmacies. Pregnant women should not abuse blackheads in the diet and it is advisable to avoid medicines that have this spice in the formula, as blackheads can cause uterine contractions.

In addition, cloves can be incorporated into many dishes, savory and sweet, bringing, in addition to health, a special flavor and aroma to your table.
